A petition concerning slavery on sugar estates is printed, including statistics and letters from various plantation owners and agents. Another statistical article examines the numbers of troops each state has enlisted. An article announces the arrest of a spy woman. Several reports from around the country reveal local action.

The paper was printed in Salem, North Carolina from 1851-1892, when it was absorbed by the Western Sentinel. At the time of this collection, the paper was edited and printed by L.V. Blum, who owned the Salem Printing Office. He also published and sold the annual Farmers' and Planters' Almanac.
