"Salutatory" explains the purpose of this paper to advance the Baptist denomination, with support of the Confederacy, and to cultivate fraternal relations with others. Blurbs following this article invite readers to write letters, to solicit exchanges with other Southern journals, and to subscribe. A report of "Domestic and Indian Missions" is printed. An editorial encourages "Temperance in the Army." A letter from Mrs. Mary E. Savage portrays the trials of war while expressing the nobleness of Southern women. Additional articles include "The New England Puritan," "Flattery," and "Church Discipline." About two-thirds of page 3, "Secular News" is devoted to war news, including a report on Battle of Harper's Ferry, with summary statement by T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson. First page is torn down the middle and parts of it are taped together.
The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
