"Mrs. Sallie Swope" describes the woman who served in army hospitals in Alabama, while another article titled "Woman in the Hospital" defines women in hospitals in general. An editorial titled "Slavery" examines the institution as the "wisest and best provision for that large class of our fellow-men, who are compelled to labor, under the guidance of their superiors." Another editorial argues that for "Religion a Civilizer," and that Northerners are uncivilized due to their lack of religion. Additional articles encourage readers to beware of extortionists ("Extortioners") and to provide the paper to soldiers ("Our Paper in the Army"). About one-fifth of page 3, "Secular News," is devoted to war news, including an Official Report of General Lee regarding Shepherdstown and Dispatches from General McClellan regarding Antietam and South Mountain.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
