Letters from contributors, titled "Reedy River Association" and "Colportage in the Army," outline funds for soldiers and for newspapers to be distributed to soldiers. An article reports the pocket Bible of a fallen soldier. An article titled "Grace Among the Soldiers" combines the comments of many different chaplains expressing religious conditions of their soldiers. A short "Secular News" section reports on an imminent attack on Charleston.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
