At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An army correspondent writes about being "Lost in an Alabama Cave." "The Bible" writes about the Bible as the only word of God. "The Way of Transgressors" uses an example from the latest raid on Richmond to prove the superiority of the South. "Proclamation by the President of the Confederate States of America" prints a proclamation by Jefferson Davis setting aside a day for "humiliation, fasting, and prayer." Several letters transcribed in "Religion in the Army" presents the religious atmosphere in the Camp of the 14th Cavalry, Poague's Batallion, and the 10th Cavalry. An editorial examines the "Feminine Influence" on children and society. "Notes on the Times" reports on the suspension of the habeas corpus and Confederate money, amongst other items.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
