At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recruitment broadside for John Sherman's Brigade's 65th Ohio Regiment, created by Recruiting Lieutenant J.N. Victor. Printed on dark blue paper. Announces that "In this, her hour of need, your country asks assistance. Patriots and Freemen! will you refuse?" Says he is prepared to enlist a company of men from Erie and Lorain Counties with headquarters at Milan, Ohio. Wants three-year recruits or to enter for the duration of the war. Regiment is at Camp Buckingham near Mansfield, Ohio. Says regular army officers to lead the regiment. Headquarters over Edridge's Store, Milan, Ohio.
