Union occupation newspaper. Also published by W.F. Carne (fl. 1861-1862). Short item says the body of "the negro lad Sam," who had drowned in Hunting Creek during a previous storm, had been found. Report on the popularity of "Foot-ball" -- says it is played everywhere by both boys and men but "We suggest, however, that the game be discarded in all the business streets - so that passers-by - especially ladies, be not incommoded by dashing balls and gangs of lads running at full tilt." Quick line says General Winfield Scott is leaving for Europe. News items from the South, including remarks on prisoners of war in Richmond and Jefferson Davis's designation of a day (November 15) of fasting, humiliation, and prayer. Contrabands reported as coming into Fort Monroe from the South. Foreign news reported. News of continuing troubles in New Mexico. Page 2 has a list of general news, including a short discussion of the likelihood of British and French recognition of the Confederacy, a report of the resignation of General Beauregard from "The Norfolk Day," and a report that General Halleck has arrived in Washington, as well as many others. Also a listing of war news, includes a report that General Fremont is being removed from command.
