Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Edited by Eastman with editorial assistance by Charles Giles of Belfast, Maine. Soldiers' newspaper (Vol. 1, No. 1) reporting on capture of Forts Jackson and Philip, which led to the fall of New Orleans. Gives news of events in New Orleans since its fall. Report of drunken Union soldier mistakenly hurrahed for Jeff Davis and was thrown in jail. Other miscelleanous news tidbits throughout, mostly concerned with logisitical issues involving New Orleans. News extracts from the "New Orleans Bee" of 2 May 1862 and the "New Orleans Picayune" of 6 May 1862. List of dead from the 30th Massachusetts regiment as well as an update on the movements of 8th Vermont regiement. Editorial note says: "we shall try to make the 'News Letter' the best paper that was ever printed on Ship Island, - and as good as any that will ever be printed here."
