Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

After recounting various successes and failures, including comments on the capitulation of Vicksburg and Port Hudson, the fighting in Mississippi, and the Battle of Gettysburg, Davis discusses foreign relations at length. Other topics covered include: finances, the army, prisoner exchanges, the Trans-Mississippi Department, the navy, and enemy conduct. With "Rebel Archives" stamp from the Record Division of the War Department on the first page. Stab-stitched.
