Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certificate 191 is co-signed by Comptroller Matthew T. Brennan, Supervisor Tweed. Also includes two other illegible signatures. Page two is countersigned by Michael Conway. Partially printed document verifiying that Charles Strickland, a carpenter, has obtained a draft substitute, William Duck. Also verifies that William Duck is Strickland's substitute, and page three verifies that N. Muller is Duck's substitute. Five cent internal revenue stamps on pages two and three.

Brennan entered the fire department and eventually gained a place in the Sixth Ward's politically active Engine Company No. 21.
