Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inquires if she has been married and discusses family business. Hears rumors that Ruth has been married to a Mr. Thompson, and wishes to know if it is true. In fact, Ruth had married Henry Thompson, a neighbor at North Elba, one month earlier. Also discusses the various movements of members of the family, including John Brown.
