Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed on mount. Handsome image. Image retouched to remove the posing stand (near Lyons' right foot). Imprint on verso. Inscription on verso reads "Killed in battle at Wilson's Creek, August 10, 1861. In command of Union forces at St. Louis, (May, 1861); captured Jefferson City & Boonville. Brigadier-General U.S. Volunteers (full rank) May 17, 1861." Accompanied by a salt print of the same image (GLC06447.01).
