At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Accompanied by three war-era notes from 1862 and three pressed flowers, orginally contained in the diaries and now housed separately.

Averell, a noted cavalry commander, saw services at Bull Run, the Peninsula, Fredericksburg, and in various mounted skirmishes. At Kelly's Ford, Va. March 1863, he is credited with winning the first significant Union cavalry victory.
