Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Over 200 letters from Sergeant Elmore to his wife, with an additional 60 from his wife. Highlights include pursuit of Lee's army after Gettysburg, the siege of Atlanta, Sherman's march to the sea, and other campaigns. Also includes several loose pages of an informal diary kept by Elmore during the March to the Sea, which he mailed home to his wife upon reaching Savannah. Elmore was discharged in July 1865.
