At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Acting in his capacity as probate judge, Heard appoints Bazil G. Ijams the administrator of Cunningham's estate. Written four days before Heard was elected chief justice of Colorado County, Texas.

In 1830, Heard emigrated to Texas, where he was granted a league and a labor in Stephen F. Austin's colony. He commanded a volunteer regiment at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1840, he was elected chief justice of Wharton County and accompanied Colonel John H. Moore's expedition against the Indians of the upper Colorado River.
