Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed circular letter to the Sheriff of Montgomery County ordering that Philip Capeland be taken into custody and transported to the Court House in Houston to answer to the charge of "Groce Contempt." Signed by Lubbock in his capacity as the clerk of the Harris County district court. Docket, signed by Sheriff Fitzgerald, indicates the letter was returned on 4 October 1844 not executed because Capeland was not found in the county.

Lubbock moved to Texas in 1836, where he owned a store and was involved in ranching. He served as clerk of the Harris County district court from 1841 to 1857. A Democrat, he was elected governor of Texas in 1861.
