Signed by Stewart as district clerk pro tem of Montgomery County, Texas. An attached document dated 14 August 1851 and signed by H.R. Bell as a clerk certifies that "the late Republic of Texas was adjudged to pay the cost in the case described...above."
Stewart, a druggist who moved to Texas in 1830, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. He held several public offices and is credited with drawing the original draft of the Lone Star flag.
