Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Barnett as alcalde of Austin and George Huff and A.M. Clare as arbitrators in the cases. Notes monetary damages relating to two separate cases, each on their own a side of the document. Possibly a page removed from a ledger, as both cases were "Issued 4th Nov. 1830."

Barnett, a pioneer settler and public official, was among the "Old 300" to colonize Texas with Stephen Austin in 1823. He held several offices in Austin (including being elected alcalde in 1829) and was one of the three delegates from Austin Municipality to the Convention of 1836, where he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. In 1836, he was appointed chief justice of Austin County.
Huff, a pioneer settler and tradesman was among the "Old 300" to colonize Texas with Stephen Austin.
