Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subpoenas John Middletone, Jonathan Roberts, and one other (name illegible) to appear. Stewart signed as district clerk pro tem of Montgomery County.

Stewart, a druggist who moved to Texas in 1830, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. He held several public offices and is credited with drawing the original draft of the Lone Star flag.
