At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes how the regiment was marched through Washington, and realizes the harshness of being part of a non-commissioned unit. Talks of the fight at Manassas (First Battle of Bull Run) in which 11000 union soldiers lost their lives. As letter was probably written for Theodore, the quote "write soon to Theodore" makes sense.
