Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter written by James Pollard Espy to Alexander Catlin Twining. Espy speaks about past and future experiments and the character of huricanes. This letter is written on blue paper. While the date written on the top of the first page of the letter reads December 16, 1854, written on the back of the letter is the date December 15, 1854.
