At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An envelope addressed to Alexander C. Twining in New Haven, Conneticut from the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C. The envelope is unaccompanied by contents. 121.757 was written on the back of the envelope. Both bottom corners are torn as is the full length of the right seam. Washington Free January 22, is stamped on the front of the envelope.
