Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to the mother of a patron of the YMCA and reports that he is happy and healthy. Discusses the mission of her organization. Includes the importance of letters and mail from home. Adds a note that she is also from Wisconsin and is proud of the state's war effort. Written on YMCA American Expeditionary Force letterhead.

Belknap was a canteen worker in the downtown Paris YMCA.
