Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother that Jim Plant, a childhood friend, has been seriously wounded and asks her to lessen the gravity of the situation when she tells Jim's mother. Inquires about local news. Questions the reliability of the mail. Includes pictures for safe keeping (not included) and his military identification number. Complains about the lack of mail from friends. Written on American Expeditionary Force letterhead.

Flynn was in Company L, 3rd Battallion, 111th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces.
