Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother on Thanksgiving Day. Says that he is thankful to be alive as his company has lost 125 soldiers. Reports that he has not been paid in five months and could not afford to go into Lyon for the day. Written on a postcard of the Pont de la Guillotiere in Lyon.

Flynn was in Company L, 3rd Battallion, 111th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces.
