Writes to his mother about the trip across the Atlantic. Describes the small French town in which he is stationed. Reports having received several letters from home. Requests a Christmas care package that includes a couple of pounds of maple sugar. Describes the language barrier between the soldiers and the local French. Written on American Expeditionary Forces letterhead.
While overseas, Private Hopkins was in Company D, 21st Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Once he returned, he joined Company 5, 153rd Depot Brigade, at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Laurence Hopkins is his brother.
