Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends his mother a Christmas package coupon and reminds her to include two pounds of maple sugar. Includes his address and points out that he has been promoted to a first class private. Written on American Expeditionary Forces letterhead.

While overseas, Private Hopkins was in Company D, 21st Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Once he returned, he joined Company 5, 153rd Depot Brigade, at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Laurence Hopkins is his brother.
