Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his father sending him birthday wishes. Reports that letters are strictly censored and he is not able to write with much detail. Includes his address. Postscript reports that the letter was returned; it was eventually mailed with GLC07810.022. Written on YMCA letterhead.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
