Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his parents about his lack of correspondence from the family and the unreliability of the mail. Mentions the countryside and adds that any description of the land is prohibited. He has recieved a letter from a friend who informs him that Harold is at Camp Meade. Requests three pairs of woolen socks.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
