Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his mother that he is writing this letter on the floor of his tent out of the torrential rain. Mentions having received a letter from Harold. Includes a description of the local flowers in bloom directed at his father. Reminds his mother about items he would like included in his care package. Written on YMCA letterhead.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
