Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his parents apologizing for not having written. Encloses a Christmas package permit (not included) and a reminder of what he would like sent. Replies to local news sent from home. Reports the outbreak of lice (cooties) in his camp. Intimates that he is optimistic about the peace negotiations. Written on paper taken from a fallen German soldier.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
