Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother on Easter explaining that he has not left Camp d'Auvours but expects to be on the move in three weeks. Has sent her silk stockings from Paris and hopes they will reach her unscathed. Encloses letters from two children in Pittsburgh (included as GLC07810.055.01 and GLC07810.055.02). Written on American Expeditionary Force letterhead.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
