Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother about the temporary camp in which he is currently posted. Expects to be embarking soon after reaching Brest. Adds that he will continue sending mail to Ashtabula and asks that she continue on her end. Encloses a newspaper clipping regarding the return of the 80th Division (included). Written on Knights of Columbus letterhead. C

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
