Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dr. Locy was a surgeon with the United States Navy and toured with the 6th Regiment of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Locy system for classifying Naval Postmarks, named for Locy after a 1929 article, remains the basis for postmark classifications in use today by all Naval Cover collectors.
