Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife about meeting friendly French soldiers. Wonders why he has not recieved any letters from home. Discusses the rainy weather. Says that he has seen many German prisoners working on the roads. Inquires as to his daughter's well-being and local news. Written on American Red Cross letterhead.

Private Lyons was in the 307th Company, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces and was part of the Polish Collegium.
