Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

News of the funeral preparations for Lincoln in New York. Also includes reports of the capture of Raleigh by Sherman.
Two letters, one between Edwin Booth and Judge Edmonds, the other between Booth and Mr. Henry Jarrett are published. Edwin Booth, brother of John Wilkes Booth was an ardent Lincoln supporter. The paper is uncut.

The first issue of The New York Daily Times was published on September 18, 1851. "Daily" was dropped from the title in 1857. The paper was founded by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones.
