Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Shaffer as P.C. (Post Commander) and Layton T. Smith as Post Adjutant. Partially printed certification that Swingle had "served as a Union Soldier... in Company A, 137th Regt Pennsylvania Volunteers and also in Battery D, 6th New York Artillery and Battery D, 5th United States Light Artillery." Surrounded by a decorative border with battle scenes and images of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
