Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The masthead of the paper is torn off. Contains articles on slavery, religion, African colonization, and short blurbs on Mormons and possible declaration of war by Mexico. The Liberty Convention (for emancipation) announcement appears on p. 4, and was to be held in Portland, Maine. Also contains many advertisements and announcements. Published in Maine, probably in Hallowell (inferred from many ads from there). Date inferred.
