Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pro-slavery newspaper, vol. 1 no. 6. Misdated June 11 but actually 14th, as noted inside newspaper. Anti-secessionist newspaper speaks of disloyal slaves now fighting against the survival of Virginia. There are also articles that argue that in fighting the federal government, Virginia is loosing slavery without compensation. Lists predictions of what will happen if secession fighting continues.
