Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Union ticket for the 1864 presidential election. Lists Abraham Lincoln for President and Andrew Johnson for Vice President. Lists electors for districts in California. Printed in orange. Printed on verso is an engraving of the ships, the Alabama the Kearsarge, and the Deerhound in battle.

On 19 June 1864, the Union Kearsarge sank the Confederate Alabama near Cherbourg, France. Some Confederates aboard the Alabama escaped to England aboard the nearby British yacht Deerhound.
