Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document countersigned by W.F.A. Torbert with the clerical signature of S. Williams. Orders the senior officer accompanying troops to New York to telegraph the number of soldiers to the Chief Quartermaster General so he may provide adequate transportation. Written on Third Army Corps letterhead. "Third Army Corps" has been struck and replaced with "Army of the Potomac."
