Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Acting Rear Admiral Porter as Commander of the Mississippi Squadron to Captain Walke as commander of the USS "Carondelet." Says Walke is not to let prisoners go to Vicksburg for any reason, nor to allow them any further communication with that place. Tells him to keep the "Minnehaha" under his guns and to make sure the ship does not keep up enough steam to move.
