Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Emancipation of a 23 year old female slave owned by Colonel John R. White and described as "of an orange color and about five feet seven inches in height." Lists her history and who he bought her from. Signed by three witnesses. Approved and certified by the St. Louis Circuit Court and signed by the clerk, M. S. Cerre. Docketed by clerk.
