Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed. Perry signs as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant, 63rd United States Colored Troops. Receives $400 from Captain T. A. Walker, Superintendent of Freedmen. Remarks indicate "Being amount of funds received from sale of wood cut by Freedmen."

The 63rd U.S. Colored Troops were organized 11 March 1864 from the 9th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent).
