Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Walker signs as Captain in the 63rd U.S.C.T. and Superintendent of Freedmen, West Tennessee. Lists from whom, from what source, and the dollar amount of monies received.

The 63rd U.S. Colored Troops were organized 11 March 1864 from the 9th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent).
