Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Berger turns clothing, camp, and garrison equipage over to T. A. Walker, Captain of Company "B," 63rd U.S.C.T. Lists the number, type of article, and condition of items such as knapsacks, kettles, canteens, and hatchets.

The 63rd U.S. Colored Troops were organized 11 March 1864 from the 9th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent).
