At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Signed by Walker, commander of Company B, 9th Louisiana Volunteers. Lists the names and designations of eight soldiers, and the clothing they received. Includes each of their signatures in the form of a mark, "x." Walker signs as a witness.

The 63rd U.S. Colored Troops were organized 11 March 1864 from the 9th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent).
