Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Walker, Captain in the 63rd United States Colored Troops and Superintendent, Freedmen's Department, District of West Tennessee. Lists the names of people who paid the Department, dates the Department received payment, and reason for payment. Notes that a John Moody paid the Department $5 in "Fines for cruel treatment of a Negro." Marked at the top as a duplicate.

The 63rd U.S. Colored Troops were organized 11 March 1864 from the 9th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent).
