Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Attempts to demonstrate that Clymer is a fit representative for the Democratic party in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election. Notes that Clymer is "foremost in denunciation of the Government, and strenuous in his opposition to every measure calculated to suppress rebellion."

Geary served as a General in the Civil War. He was the Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee in 1866, when he ran against Clymer, a Democrat. Geary won the election, serving as Governor 1867-1873. Clymer was a member of the Pennsylvania State senate from October 1860- March 1866, and was a United States Representative 1873-1880.
