Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains a report on warfare amongst Native American tribes of the Colorado Valley, Southern Utah, Southeastern California, and Western Arizona. Includes news from other states, such as the passage of bills concerning the rights of freedmen. Reports on the expected finalization of a peace treaty between the United States Government and Native Americans in Arkansas. Contains international reports, including a discussion of the continued tension between the United States and Mexico.

The Daily Alta California, published in the second half of the nineteenth century, is also referred to as the Alta California and the Alta Californian.
